Botox vs. Over the Counter Skin Care Products

Who hasn’t heard about the brilliant possibilities presented by Botox. As far as skin care products go, there are many who believe that Botox is the wave of the future. The problem is that using Botox provides some very real risks that are often trivialized or overlooked altogether. You are, after all, injecting your skin with a powerful toxin when you undergo a Botox treatment. It makes sense to take a step back and carefully weigh the potential benefits when compared to the potential problems that arise as a result of Botox procedures.

Botox Pros

It’s a good idea to examine the benefits of Botox first so that you understand there are some very real benefits. Botox is extremely effective at eliminating many of the fine lines and wrinkles that plague so many women. The other benefit of Botox is that the effects are instantaneous. This means that you aren’t waiting around for months for the benefits of this treatment to kick in. You leave the procedure with visible results—though there may be some reddening, swelling, and/or puffiness. One final benefit to mention is that Botox doesn’t require the recovery time of many cosmetic procedures. You can leave the office and return to work.

Botox Cons

Unfortunately, the real benefits of Botox are heavily outweighed, in many books, by the negatives of Botox treatment. The first to consider is the price tag. Botox, is not a cheap procedure on any given day. When you consider that the results are only temporary and will need to be repeated in order to sustain them, the price tag really escalates. Many women simply cannot afford Botox treatments.

Another con to consider is that Botox works by paralyzing certain facial muscles. Many people who get the injections are unable to show facial expressions for quite some time after them. Others will have a very fake or plastic look to their skin that is not exactly the intended result of Botox treatments.

Negative physical reactions are another potential downside of Botox treatments. This can be in the form of pain, swelling, bruising, and the development of symptoms consistent with the flu. Botox may also have reactions when used in combination with certain medications. Be sure you offer full disclosure of any over the counter medications, prescriptions drugs, street pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and herbal supplements you may be taking in order to avoid these potentially serious interactions.

In rare cases Botox injections result in death. That’s a high price to pay in your quest for beauty when there are many skin care products on the market that are equally effective in providing amazing results for your skin’s youth and beauty. Before you make the decision to take the plunge and the risks involved in Botox injections, make sure you’ve tried some of the many wonderful skin care products on the market that promise results to rival those of Botox. You may save time, money, and potential danger to your health in the process.
