Diet and Skin Care

The old adage, “you are what you eat” has taken on new meaning in recent years. Whether you are eating with a specific goal or just eating whatever you can get your hands on, the foods you consume become a matter of health and beauty before all is said and done. There is a good deal of truth to this old saying. More importantly though, the foods you eat have a direct impact on not only your physical health and weight, but also the health and beauty of your skin. What this means is that the foods you eat can have a very real and lasting impact on how old you look and how young you look. This means that you can use your diet to reverse the signs of aging if you wish to do so.

There has been quite a bit of buzz lately about the important role of food when it comes to skin care. In the past, the general consensus was that the idea of foods impacting things like acne and other skin related issues were a myth. Times, they are a-changing. Science is leading us along a different path and reminding us that, once again, grandma was on to something. Whether she realized the science behind her pearls of wisdom or left them up to years of keen observation, she had things right, to a point.

So, what foods are going to be the miracle cure for aging? The good news is that this is a rather lengthy list of foods that you can choose from. This means that you aren’t going to be limited in selection or flavor. Instead, you can enjoy a healthy diet with a nearly infinite amount of variety and still receive the full measure of healing skin care nutrition that is necessary to retain or restore that youthful vitality on the inside as well as the outside.

Back to the foods, a diet that ranks low on the glycemic index, also referred to as a low GI diet, is a great place to begin. You get the filling complex carbohydrates that are so vital to good health while also enjoying the benefit of fewer wild fluctuations in insulin levels, that often lead to inflammation and other damage to the skin that is often associated with aging.

Another component you will want to include in your diet, when anti aging skin care is the goal, is the inclusion of EFAs or essential fatty acids. Omega-3 is one of the most recommended of these critical ingredients because it offers so many benefits beyond aiding the body in providing much needed moisture for the skin from within. A healthy daily dose of Omega-3 helps with the treatment of dry skin, including dry scalp, wrinkles, and even finger nail health.

Your diet plays a vital role in your skin care routine. What is your diet saying about your commitment to skin care?
