More than ever, scientific surveys are proving the essential role played by stress in causing and aggravating many psychological and physical afflictions. A headline from a 1983 Time Magazine called stress “The Epidemic of the Eighties.” The journalist also declared that stress is a main health problem. And it is doubtless that our world has become even more complicated and stressful in the past twenty-five years since that article was written.
Several surveys indicate that almost everybody feels that they are under a great deal of stress. Researchers in the field estimate that 75 - 90 percent of all visits to PCPs (Primary Care Physicians) are for stress related issues.
Most people report that their job is the major cause of their stress. And stress levels have also increased in children and the senior population for reasons including: Peer pressures that often lead to everything from cigarette smoking to alcoholism and drug abuse; the wearing away of family and religious values and ties; increased crime rates; fear for personal safety; as well as social isolation and loneliness.
Stress can be responsible for conditions such as diabetes, ulcers, low back and neck pain, hypertension, strokes and heart attacks. This is due to the increased sympathetic nervous system activity as well as a high level of cortisol, adrenaline, and other hormones. Chronic stress is co-morbid with impaired immune system resistance. Stress can cause anxiety, depression, and its several effects on one’s organs.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines “stress” as follows: “To subject to physical or mental pressure, tension, or strain”
The following definition is given for “tension”: “Mental, emotional, or nervous strain”
It defines “anxiety” as follows: “A state of uneasiness and apprehension, as about future uncertainties”
And it defines “depression” as follows: “The condition of feeling sad or despondent”
“Clinical depression” is defined as follows: “A psychiatric disorder characterized by an inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, anhedonia, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death.”
What we can be sure of is that our mind is the chief source of our feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. In other words, what we think about, and our attitudes and points of view about our experiences dictate our feelings. That way, if we can discover how to modify our thoughts, attitudes, and points of view, then we can release our stress, anxiety, and depression and attain a better state of being.
Since the beginning of time, people have sought out methods that would allow them to dissipate stress. The pharmaceutical industry seems to have a pill for everything. For that the industry has produced a large line of tranquilizers from Valium to Xanax. If you choose to utilize drugs for relief, please be sure to read the fine print and learn about the side effects, which usually include addiction and dependency. Unfortunately, these sorts of drugs attempt to treat the symptoms, rather than the cause. So when one stops taking them, the symptoms can return.
A finer method to release tension, stress, anxiety, and depression is to treat the root cause, which as I wrote previously, is usually our thought processes. There is the good news. Hypnosis is all about relaxing. The AMA accepted hypnosis in 1958 as an effective method of treating stress or stress related symptoms. And unlike drugs, there are completely no undesirable side effects.
Hypnosis is the Alpha level of consciousness. It is the daydream like temporary psychological frame of mind that we experience as we are about to fall asleep in the evening. And we experience it again as we wake up in the morning. There are a lot of different ways to guide ourselves into this relaxed mood, from progressive relaxation to visual imagery to listening to hypnosis CD’s.
When we enter a hypnotic state, we are able to communicate with our unconscious mind, which is the seat of our feelings. And it becomes easier to acknowledge new ideas and points of view that will help us to reduce anxiety, or even avoid it completely.
NLP, which is a new sort of hypnosis, offers a lot of outstanding techniques for releasing stress. Maybe the technique that works best is called the “swish” pattern - or the “flash” pattern. When you use this technique, your unconscious will automatically use negative, stress triggering mental images, to generate relaxation producing mental images. Otherwise stated, what usually makes you feel stress will automatically make you feel more relaxed!
TO SUM THINGS UP Tension, stress, anxiety, and depression can be activated by our thoughts. So by changing our attitude and the way we feel about our situation and what we have been through, we can get rid of these feelings at the root. Hypnosis and NLP are natural tools that make it possible to change our attitude and point of view to rapidly get rid of the source of our negative feelings.
